How to Get a Diamonitirion: Mount Athos Entry Permit Guide (May 2026)

The diamonitirion (Διαμονητήριον) is the official entry permit required to visit Mount Athos (the Holy Mountain / Agion Oros). Only men may enter, under the ancient avaton rule, and strict daily quotas apply. This 2026 guide explains the types of permits, the application process, quotas, fees, offices, transport contacts, and practical instructions for pilgrims.

Daily Quotas & Who Can Enter

Only men are allowed to enter Mount Athos. Adult men may apply. Males under 18 may enter only under the conditions accepted by the Pilgrims’ Bureau, normally with their father or with proper written parental consent for educational groups.

Each day the Holy Mountain normally accepts:

  • 100 Orthodox pilgrims
  • 10 non-Orthodox visitors

In practice hundreds of pilgrims are allowed daily.

Orthodox clergy may be treated separately from the ordinary lay quota. The quota is administered by the Pilgrims’ Bureau and should be confirmed before travel.

Demand varies by season. High season, major feasts, Great Lent, Holy Week, Pascha, Christmas, and summer periods can fill well in advance. Low-season availability may be easier, but no pilgrim should travel without confirmed arrangements.

Two Types of Diamonitirion

1. Genikon Diamonitirion (General Permit)

The Genikon Diamonitirion is issued through the Pilgrims’ Bureau. It normally allows a stay of four days and three nights on specific dates. It permits the pilgrim to move between monasteries, provided that overnight hospitality has been arranged in advance.

An extension may sometimes be requested from the Mount Athos authorities in Karyes, but it should not be assumed as automatic.

2. Idikon Diamonitirion (Individual / Special Permit)

The Idikon Diamonitirion is connected with a specific monastery, skete, kellion, or Athonite house. It is issued in relation to that host and should not be treated as a completely unrestricted general permit. The visitor should clarify directly with the host monastery what the permit allows, where he is expected to stay, and whether visits elsewhere are possible.

How to Apply for the Diamonitirion: Step-by-Step 2026 Process

  1. Book your date in advance
Reservations are normally made up to six months in advance through the official Pilgrims’ Bureau.
    Email: athosreservation@gmail.com
    Telephone for foreign pilgrims: +30 2310 252578
    Telephone for Greek pilgrims: +30 2310 252575
    Fax: +30 2310 222424
  2. Send the required information
Include your full name exactly as shown on your passport or identity card, date of birth, passport or ID number, nationality, religion or denomination, preferred entry date, and alternative dates. Foreign visitors should normally attach a clear copy of the passport page.
  3. Wait for confirmation
Do not treat the pilgrimage as confirmed until the Pilgrims’ Bureau has confirmed the date.
  4. Contact your chosen monastery
Request overnight hospitality directly from the monastery, skete, or Athonite house where you wish to stay. Most monasteries require prior confirmation.
  5. Book your boat ticket
Most pilgrims enter from Ouranoupoli to Dafni. Pilgrims visiting the northern/eastern side may enter from Ierissos. Boat schedules can change because of weather and operational conditions.
  6. Stay overnight in Ouranoupoli or nearby if needed
Many pilgrims stay in Ouranoupoli the night before entry in order to collect the permit early and board the morning boat.
  7. Collect your diamonitirion on the morning of entry
The printed permit is normally collected from the Pilgrims’ Office in Ouranoupoli. Personal appearance with passport or identity card is required. Pay the fee, receive the permit, and then board the boat.

Bring cash and confirm the exact amount with the Pilgrims’ Bureau before departure, because fee categories and office practice may change.

  • Bring the same passport or identity card used in the application.
  • Dress modestly. Long trousers are expected; shorts are not appropriate.

  • Monastery hospitality is traditionally offered without hotel-style payment, but donations are accepted and appropriate.

  • Hunting, hunting dogs, and rifles are forbidden on Mount Athos.
  • Do not remove religious objects, manuscripts, icons, relics, or any protected item from Mount Athos.
