No new posts This section of Athos Forum presents the principal statistical data concerning Orthodox monasticism throughout the world. The material is organized by country, continent, church jurisdiction, historical period, gender, and geographic concentration in order to provide a concise reference framework for the worldwide Orthodox monastic tradition.
The statistical pages that follow include the total number of monasteries and convents by country and continent, the relative strength of the principal Orthodox churches, the chronological distribution of monastic foundations, the distinction between men’s and women’s institutions, the growth of monasticism in the diaspora, and the historical development of monastic life in the modern period.
The data are presented primarily in tabular form, with only minimal commentary. The purpose of this section is to provide a factual and comparative overview rather than an interpretive history. Subsequent articles may draw upon these data to examine the expansion, decline, and transformation of Orthodox monasticism across different regions and centuries.
The section includes:
* Orthodox Monasteries by Country
* Orthodox Monasteries by Continent
* Orthodox Monasteries by Church Jurisdiction
* Orthodox Monasteries by Century of Foundation
* Male and Female Monastic Institutions
* Largest Monastic Concentrations
* Ancient and Modern Foundations
* Orthodox Monasticism in the Diaspora
* Orthodox Monasteries Under Communism and After 1990
* Top 100 Orthodox Monasteries Worldwide
The statistical overview is intended to complement the regional and national surveys of Orthodox monasteries already presented elsewhere in this forum. | 1 | 1 | By Athos 2 months 2 weeks ago |

No new posts Orthodox Monasteries in the WorldThe present section of Athosforum is dedicated to the documentation and study of Orthodox monasticism throughout the world. It brings together monasteries, sketes, convents, hermitages, and monastic communities belonging to the Orthodox Christian tradition across many countries and regions. The purpose of this project is to provide a growing international directory and research resource on Orthodox monastic life, history, spirituality, architecture, and cultural presence. The listed monasteries include ancient foundations of the Eastern Roman and Slavic worlds, as well as modern monastic communities established in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia, the Americas, and Oceania. Each regional or national page presents monasteries according to country, ecclesiastical jurisdiction, historical tradition, or geographic area. The material includes historical information, monastic affiliations, notable saints and elders, architectural observations, bibliographical references, and where possible links to official websites and additional scholarly resources. Orthodox monasticism constitutes one of the oldest continuous spiritual and cultural traditions in the world. From the deserts of Egypt, Palestine, and Sinai to the monastic republic of Mount Athos, and from the monasteries of Greece, Serbia, Romania, Russia, and Georgia to contemporary foundations throughout the modern diaspora, monasteries have preserved liturgical life, theological learning, manuscript culture, sacred art, and ascetic practice for centuries. This section aims not merely to function as a list of monasteries, but as an evolving archive and research platform for the global history and contemporary presence of Orthodox monasticism. | 39 | 39 | By Athos 2 months 2 weeks ago |
